Fashion vs. Common Sense

There is a great piece on Pez today related to wheel building. Common sense when it comes to bicycle wheels seems to be in short supply lately so it's encouraging to see things like this. Can anybody guess what "pretty wheels" they are using as the comparison? There's enough clues to narrow it down.
